The Route of Santiago de Compostela - A Nautical Journey

Oporto · Vigo · Cangas · Island of Cíes · Baiona · Islands of Ons · Sanxenxo · Portonovo · San Vicente do Mar · Vilanova de Arousa · Cabo de Cruz (Boiro) · Pontecesures · Milladoiro · Santiago de Compostela

It is true that many routes lead to Santiago de Compostela. With this journey we propose to travel to this World Heritage Site in a sailboat combined with a short distance walk. We will pick you up at the city of Oporto, in Portugal and drive you through the beautiful landscapes of Minho, crossing the border into Spain to Galicia, to reach the port of Vigo. The sailboat awaits to start your journey, touching several ports with some visits and meals included, until desembarkation for a small walk to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. There, you will receive the "Compostela", to prove that you accomplished the Pilgrimage of the Way of St James.
MAP
A unique and different way to make the pilgrimage to Compostela in a sailboat, as the Apostle Santiago is believed to have done many centuries ago.
The Nautical Journey is a new officially recognized way to get to Compostela, visiting the most emblematic places of Rias Baixas. The main requirement is to sail at least 90 nautical miles and stamp the Credential on all required ports. Finally, to complete the Way, we must walk the last 7 km from Milladoiro to Santiago, stamping the Credential one last time at the Pilgrim Workshop, to receive the Compostela.
Transfer from Oporto to Vigo, where the boat awaits anchored at Real Clube de Vigo. Depending on the time of arrival, you can settle on the boat, leave your suitcase on board and enjoy the day to discover the city, the historic center, the harbor area and main streets, or take a guided tour. Free dinner.
Night moored in the port of Vigo aboard the sailboat.
You begin the Nautical Journey departing from Vigo towards Baiona (Monte Real Yates Club of Baiona). Stop to stamp your Credential in Cangas and get to know this sailors village (1 hour and a half stop). Then you head to the Islands of Cíes (Galicia Atlantic Islands Terrestrial Maritime National Park) and have lunch at anchor in this unique paradise. At dusk, you sail to dock in the village of Baiona, to stamp the Credential and spend the night. Free dinner.
Night moored in the bay of Baiona aboard the sailboat. (Distance: 20/25 miles)
Today you leave from Baiona to the Islands of Ons (Galicia Atlantic Islands Terrestrial Maritime National Park) where you'll stop for lunch and enjoy their famous gastronomy. In the afternoon, stop in Sanxenxo (1 hour and a half stop) to stamp the Credential and walk around this pretty town. At dusk you leave for Portonovo, where you will spend the night. Free dinner.
Evening moored in the port of Portonovo aboard the sailboat. (Distance: 26/30 miles)
Depart Portonovo for San Vicente do Mar (O Grove) to get another stamp and take a tour of this beautiful coastal area (1 hour and a half stop). You continue sailing until the arrival to the Ria de Arousa, where from the boat, you will see the islets of Rúa, Xidoiro Areoso and, finally, the Island of Arousa, where you set sail for a picnic on board. In the afternoon, stop at the port of Vilanova de Arousa to stamp your Credential (1 hour) and at dusk, you will sail to the port of Cabo de Cruz (Boiro) for overnight. Free dinner.
Night moored in Cabo de Cruz harbor aboard the sailboat. (Distance: 30/35 miles)
This morning you say goodbye to the captain and a speedboat will be waiting for you to make the ascent of Ulla river “La Traslatio”, until Pontecesures. (12 miles - 1 hour sailing)
At this point you will have a transfer to Milladoiro, while your luggage is carried to Santiago. Now you only have to walk the mandatory final 7 km to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where you will get the final stamp in your Credential and receive the Compostela.
Enjoy your trip!
